Transformer oil testing

We been contracted to take a series of oil samples on a fleet of over 150 solar transformers and use dissolved gas analysis to assess the condition of the transformers, to look for trends across the fleet and help to explain a number of failures.

Solar Farm Inspections

We have been engaged by various clients to carry out in depth final acceptance inspections on over 200MW of solar farms across the UK. Our typical scope of work includes harmonic measurements, protection system review and testing, partial discharge monitoring, thermography, visual and operational checks. Operational and safety arrangements are reviewed on all sites to ensure they meet minimum UK requirements.   On completion of the site visit a full technical report and punch list with budget repair costs is prepared to present all findings to the client.

HV and electrical safety training

Over the past 4 years Horan Power Engineering have been delivering training at a customer’s wind power HV training centre in Haslingden, North of Manchester.  We now have access to this training centre, and have started to run our own training courses for private customers.  The training network includes 33kV transformers and switchgear of various types installed so they can be made live for practical switching exercises. Courses we have run so far include HV authorisation and assessment courses, where we assess staff for HV switching on a live 33kV network and half day HV Competent Person courses for access...

Operating the HV network on our first offshore wind farm!

Horan Power Engineering have delivered a package a of HV rules, authorised persons and HV training to the operator of an offshore wind farm. Our HV control room will provide the safety management systems needed to operate the onshore and offshore assets associated with the wind farm.  All switching will be pre-approved or approved in real time by our control engineers and we will also take on responsibility for auditing and authorisation of the client’s staff. We can also supplement the client’s staff with our own SAP's who are available on 24/7 callout.

Failure investigations

Horan Power Engineering are investigating VT (voltage transformer) failures at solar and wind sites for multiple clients across the UK. While the details of individual cases are confidential, our approach can be broken down into the following steps:-   Investigate cause of fault Undertake risk assessment Provide recommendations on how best to manage VTs already deployed within portfolio Inspect and monitor VTs considered 'at risk' within portfolio Provide operational advice on maintaining employee safety while operating in the vicinity of 'at risk' VTs

Bann Road Solar Park

Horan Power Engineering operate Bann Road solar park on behalf of BayWa r.e. providing a comprehensive service covering health and safety, HV and O&M services. We have taken HV and LV equipment under our Safety Rules, and manage the network to ensure all switching operations are safe and that equipment is appropriately maintained. We also manage access to the site, and ensure all activities taking place on site are safe. Requests to access site, switching requests, RAMS review and emergency response are handled through the Horan Power Engineering Control Room to provide round the clock coverage.

High voltage maintenance

Other the past 18 months we have carried out high voltage maintenance on over 20 different wind farms, and we have used this experience to develop our wind farm HV asset management system. We feel strongly that high voltage maintenance should be planned on a scientific basis, with efforts concentrated on the equipment that is likely to fail and have a big impact on safety or reliability.  Our engineer Richard Horan was previously responsible for the reliability of power supplies to the London Underground, and understands the three way balance between safety, reliability and cost.  All maintenance is also carried out and...

High voltage operations for Nordex

Horan Power Engineering operate a high voltage control room on behalf of Nordex.  We have trained and authorised over 100 of their personnel, and it is our responsibility to ensure they operate in a safe way. We review and approve switching procedures for pre-planned works and provide technical support and emergency support for all Nordex high voltage staff.  A live website shows the status of the high voltage network on all 25 high voltage networks we manage and provides a library of useful information and previously approved schedules that is available to all authorised staff.  Through this system we have...

Anaerobic digestion power plant in Northern Ireland

Using Safegrid earthing software we have recently completed earthing design for an 11kV connected anerobic digestion power plant in Northern Ireland.  This was a particularly challenging site built on rock in a former quarry.  Soil resistivity measurements were taken on site and geological maps were consulted to understand the strata of the underlying ground before starting on the design.  Calculations were carried out to ENA standard 41-24, and included calculation of the proportion of fault current that would return through the 11kV cable screen back to the NIE 33/11kV substation. We regularly carry out earthing measurements and designs for utility substations, wind...

Offshore wind farm repairs in Denmark

In 2015 Horan Power Engineering were asked to attend an offshore wind farm substation where the main busbars carry the power from the wind farm were faulty.  Our offshore trained engineers attended site and fixed the fault in record time.
